Stage Disasters: Lip Synching to Face Fires
When you cram thousands of watts of electricity, thousands of dollars in pyrotechnics, and thousands of crazed music fans drinking thousands of draft beers under one roof, disasters are bound to happen. The singers and musicians are extremely vulnerable on stage, where they can trip over equipment, are subject to technical difficulties, and are open to attacks from an angry mob with surprisingly accurate throwing arms. The following is just a sample of the variety of stage disasters which have taken place around the world.
Michael Jackson
When pyrotechnics exploded too early during the filming of a Pepsi ad, Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire, a disaster he was unaware of until the flames reaches his scalp causing second and third degree burns. Some speculate that the medications administered after the multiple surgeries to his scorched head would lead to his addiction to painkillers.
James Hetfield
This disaster was not limited to the stage. Two bands, both of who’s music is downloadable as online karaoke songs were scheduled to play that night in Montreal, and after Metallica left early, Guns ‘N’ Roses took the stage. Unfortunately, the stage monitors did not have time to be tuned properly, so the musicians were unable to hear themselves. But it would be when Axl Rose would end the concert early, claiming he had a soar throat, that would cause thousands of Montrealers to riot. Aside from trashing the Olympic Stadium they would take to the streets, flipping cars, looting stores and lighting fires, causing millions of dollars worth of damage.
Here’s a new report recounting some of what happened.
Beyoncé
Thankfully there were no injuries during her fall down a flight of steps, but the pride must have taken a beating. Hats off to Beyoncé however, for maintaining composure to keep singing and dancing like a pro.
Oasis
Whenever people talk about Oasis, you generally hear two comments: love the music, hate the musicians. So its of no surprise that some Gallagher-hater tried to take out both brothers on stage in Toronto during the Virgin Festival.
Sunday Night Cruise
While no one caught fire, sprained an ankle, or got into a fist fight during this incident, the bassist would surely consider his smooth move a disaster.
Synyster Gates
You should start paying attention at 0:58 seconds. What’s most impressive about this disaster is the recovery.
Nickelback
Portugal’s good taste in music attributed to the crashing and burning of Nickelback’s set.
Henry Rollins
In the punk rock community this wouldn’t qualify as a disaster, just a regular day at the office, sweating and fighting. To me the true failure resides with Rollins’ inability to wipe the smirk off the annoying audience member’s face.
Ashlee Simpson
Everyone criticized her when she got busted for lip synching on Saturday Night Live. But in reality people should have been thanking her for sparing their delicate ear drums from what took place during this half time show.
Kurt Cobain
Not that any of these clips really need explanations defining what makes them stage disasters, but this one in particular easily takes the cake as the most chaotic.

I have to say Beyonce did a pretty good job at recovering from the fall
