International Women’s Day 2010, I am Woman Hear Me Roar

March 8th, 2010 marks the 99th anniversary of International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate women’s achievements of the past and present. The 2010 IWD theme chosen by the UN is “Equal rights, equal opportunities, Progress for all”.  Events are held worldwide to celebrate the day and to remember the need to continue to strive for equal rights and opportunities for women worldwide.  Congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow for being the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker.

International Women’s Day 2010

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we thought we’d choose a song that evoked the spirit and meaning of the day.  After looking over the possibilities, we’ve chosen Helen Reddy’s I am Woman.  The lyrics to I am Woman are both personal and communal, positive, powerful and optimistic. Originally written in 1970 by Helen Reddy and Ray Burton, it wasn’t a hit until 1972.  It became an anthem for feminists around the world, was on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart for 22 weeks reaching the No. 1 position in December of 1972.  Reddy won the Grammy for Female Best Pop Vocal Performance in 1972 for the song.

Sing along with courage to I am Woman, Helen Reddy

Lyrics by Helen Reddy; Music by Ray Burton, www.helenreddy.com

I am Woman

I am woman hear me roar

In numbers too big to ignore

And I know too much to go back and pretend

‘Cause I’ve heard it all before

And I’ve been down there on the floor

No one’s ever gonna keep me down again

Oh, yes, I am wise But it’s wisdom born of pain

Yes, I paid the price But look how much I gained

If I have to, I can do anything

I am strong I am invincible I am woman

You can bend but never break me

‘Cause it only serves to make me

More determined to achieve my final goal

And I come back even stronger

Not a novice any longer

‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul

I am woman, watch me grow See me standing toe to toe

As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land

But I’m still an embryo With a long, long way to go

Until I make my brother understand

Oh, yes, I am wise But it’s wisdom born of pain

Yes, I paid the price But look how much I gained

If I have to, I can face anything

I am strong I am invincible I am woman
