40th anniversary of John and Yoko’s Montreal Bed-In Give Peace a Chance

Married on March 20th 1969 in Gibraltar, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, travelled to Amsterdam for their honeymoon, where they held their first bed-in between March 25th and 31st, 1969 at The Amsterdam Hilton Hotel in Holland. On May 26th, 1969, John and Yoko started their 2nd bed-in for peace at The Queen Elizabeth Hotel to promote world peace.  The Montreal bed-in continued until June 2nd, with the recording of the anthemic song, Give Peace a Chance taking place in the late hours of May 31st.

From this quote by John Lennon at the start of the Montreal bed-in “… we’d like the presidents of different places to plant the seeds as a positive move toward peace, instead of just shaking hands on photographs and talking about talks about talks about talks they’re going to have about peace…. ”  the lyrics grew.

Reporter Ritchie York, offers an interesting personal recap of the events of the Montreal Bed-in, in this Globe and Mail article:  “As the week progressed, lyrics also went up on the wall for his new anthem, Give Peace a Chance, which would be recorded on the final day of the couple’s stay in Suite 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel.”

Events celebrating the anniversary:
