The voting begins, will the 2009 American Idol be Adam or Kris?

This is it, the night Adam Lambert, the glam rocker as Ryan Seacrest puts it, the crying baby destined to be a singer as Adam’s family says, competes against Kris Allen, the acoustic rocker, the kid who was paid quarters to by his family to sing, for the American Idol 2009 crown.

Adam Lambert, starts off the show with his song choice, Mad World, written by Roland Orzabel.  I love this song and found it a bit overdone the first time he performed it on the show.  But tonight his performance is a bit more subdued. This is the first time I’ve seen what I consider to be honest emotion delivered by Lambert. He didn’t over sing it, it really was an excellent performance.  As Randy said, “I’m glad you’re showing your sensitive side”.  For Simon to say that it was a little “theatrical” is a bit odd, since everything Adam has ever done on the stage has been theatrical.

Kris Allen, is up second to sing Ain’t no Sunshine by Bill Withers, accompanying himself on the piano. His beautiful voice, his phrasing of both the vocal and the instrumentation of the piano, show that he can deliver a musical performance with true feeling. You can’t help but feel what he’s singing. Randy says it’s “one of your best performances ever on that stage”.  Kara says “You make it seem like you’re singing it to us and that is so hard to do”.

Simon calls round one going to Kris!  Personally, I’d call it even.

Adam sings Simon’s choice of Change is Going to Come, written by Sam Cooke. Adam sings it as Adam would, his vocal gymnastics turning it into his own rock version. Paula says, “that’s the best I’ve ever heard you sing”.

Kris sings and plays guitar for Simon’s choice of  What’s Going On written by Renaldo “Obie” Benson, Al Cleveland, and Marvin Gaye. Again, his phrasing and soft but strong vocal carry his performance.  There is something odd rhythmically going on and  Simon likens it to “three friends in their bedroom strumming along to Marvin Gaye… too laid back for a night like this”.

Simon calls round two going to Adam!  I have to agree.

Adam rocks out vocally on Kara’s song “No Boundaries”.  I have a hard time understanding the lyrics. Randy says “It was just alright for me… to be honest”.  Simon says “You have been one of the best, most original contestants we’ve ever had on the show”.

Kris finishes the show with his interpretation of “No boundaries”.  His is a soft vocal, more believable because you can actually understand what he’s singing.  Again, his phrasing makes his interpretation believable.  He may not be the vocal gymnast that Adam is, but Kris knows how to deliver the lyrics.  He made the song his own and he made it memorable.  None of the judges are too enthusiastic about the performance in itself but congratulate Kris for being on the stage.

Simon calls round three to Adam.  I disagree, I think Kris’s interpretation was so much more honest than Adam’s.

Watch the recap here:

So the voting begins and America will decide tonight who the 2009 American Idol is.

Who do you think it will be?
