Ellen brings a breath of fresh air to American Idol

Tonight’s episode of American Idol is all about the contestants’ first and second day in Hollywood and whether or not they’ll make it through to group day, but the real spotlight is on Ellen.

Ellen Degeneres debuts as judge on American Idol Season 9

Ellen Degeneres makes her debut as the 4th judge and brings a refreshing view to the show, commenting after a not-so-great beat-boxing performance that there was something wrong with his mic.  Ellen also has some fun with a lineup having them step forward, back, forward, left, until they know that they’ve all made it through.

Contestant highlights of tonight’s episode:

  • Haeley Vaugn sings Change (Taylor Swift) really really well
  • Lilly Scott, sings Lullaby of Birdland (George Shearing) accompanying herself on guitar, really has it together;
  • Michael Lynche, sings Waiting on the World to Sing (John Mayer), and is waiting for a baby as his wife is back home giving birth to their first child
  • Didi Benami, sings Terrified (Kara DioGuardi) has a really nice vice and gives a great performance despite the pressure of singing in front of Kara
  • Crystal Bowersox, nails (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman, (Aretha Franklin)  accompanying herself on guitar, has great vocals and has the contestants in the audience singing backup vocals for her and giv her a standing ovation

At the end of the second day in Hollywood, 95 make it through to the next challenge, singing in groups.
