Tips on Registering and Auditioning
- Before doing anything read the Rules and FAQ to make sure you are eligible to participate and then download and fill out the Release Form and Guardian form (if necessary) as well as any other documentation required in the rules;
- Choose your songs well and prepare well in advance (that means now!);
- Arrive early on the day of registration and auditions, make sure you have all the required identification and documentation, and be nice to everyone you deal with;
- Try to relax while you are waiting, conserve your energy for your audition and when the audition time comes give it everything you’ve got;
- Listen to the judges comments - don’t talk over them while they are speaking;
- No matter what happens be proud of yourself for trying and don’t give up, there’s always next year!
Song Choice
Choose a song that suits you, that you can sing easily and that you know really really well. You need to be able to sing it like you mean it, like the song was written for you. Not only does the song need to be in your vocal range, but it also needs to suit your voice. If you have a sweet delicate style, singing a metal rock tune may not be the best thing to do (unless you can really sell it and re-invent it convincingly).
Last year’s auditions - what not to do
Here are a few auditions from last year that might inspire you to try out, if you think you can do better!
Kris Allen’s Audition
To know how good you have to be at the audition to make it to the final, here is the 2009 American Idol, Kris Allen’s audition, singing Leon Russell’s A Song for You:
Adam Lambert’s Audition
2009 runner-up Adam Lambert’s audition of Michael Jackson’s I Wanna Rock with You, and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is another performance to try to match:
Practice makes perfect
While you’re waiting for the auditions to come to your town, the best thing you can do to prepare is to practice your songs and your performance. Why not record them using a webcam online and get feedback from the karaoke community before singing them in front of the judges?

Adam Lambert’s voice is fine, but I don’t like his personality, he seems arrogant.
